How do I get my 2 year old son to potty standing up?

Category: Uncategorized

My two year old son is potty training and wants to stand up like his Daddy does. That would be fine but he looks around and ends up spraying everything, including me sometimes. I am not a man. I don’t know how this works. How do I get him to aim and shoot correctly?

This is why jet pilots have to learn how to keep their concentration focused. Your body wants to follow the direction your head turns. That doesn’t work too well when a slight movement of your hand can send you careening out of control into danger in a killing machine that weighs tons and costs billions. It doesn’t work too well in the hands of a toddler learning how to urinate standing up either. Toddlers are very easily distracted. Everything is interesting to them and they have to look at everything going on all at once. Their attention span is like that of a fly buzzing instantly from one spot to another. Sitting or standing still is often not in their ken. The trick is to get your son to focus on the task at hand and in hand so to speak, then to keep his focus there until he is done. Obviously standing guard right next to him isn’t always going to help. You may end up getting a dousing you hadn’t quite expected. You could make Daddy take him all the time and get the dousing. That would be a somewhat sweet revenge for all the times Daddy doesn’t quite clear the edge of the toilet seat too and leaves a nice little puddle for Mom and sister to inadvertently step into in the middle of the night. That still wouldn’t solve junior’s problem though. There is a very simple way to begin to teach your son to concentrate on what he is doing and get more of it in the bowl than outside of it. Make it a game. Give him a target to shoot for, literally. Float a rubber ducky in the toilet bowl and get him to try to sink the ducky. It sounds silly, but it works. Yes you will have to wash the ducky off but that sure beats mopping the floor, washing the bathroom rugs or having to change and wash your own clothing. There are also manufactured floating flushable targets designed specifically for that purpose. If you can’t find any, make your own with small squares of paper and circular targets drawn on them. These are easy to carry around too for bathroom trips away from home base. Then flush them away. Hit and sunk! Game won! Have fun with target practice. Mama Nono
