Any tips for a first time traveler moving to another country?

Category: Uncategorized

I have always lived in the same state and never traveled anywhere. Now my husband has been transferred to another country where they don’t speak English and my two kids and I will be moving there with him. I am very nervous. There is an international school so the kids will be attending an English speaking school. What tips do you have for a first time traveler?

It is natural to be nervous about a new situation, especially one that involves such a drastic change in lifestyle. You are being immersed in a new culture far away from what you are used to, but it how you approach it can make all the difference. Don’t expect things to be exactly the way they have been. Don’t even compare them. Instead go into this experience with an open mind and a willing attitude and you will get so much more out of the experience, both for you and for your children. If the children see you diving right in and adapting to your new surroundings, they will too. Sometimes you can even learn from them. Kids are very adaptable if they are given the chance to be. Do a little research ahead of time and read up on the area you are moving to. Learn a little bit about the culture and the locale. Start learning some of the language, even just the basic terms to get you started. Once you are there, work on the skills of survival first. Get out in the community. Find out where the local markets are and what foods and resources they have and how to get there. Start exploring some of the local shops. Get your kids registered in their schools if they are of school age. The school itself may have materials available for new families unavailable with the culture and area. They deal with this all the time. There may be other families who are willing to show you the ropes. Check with your husband’s company too. They may have resources available for families moving to the area. To get the most out of your experiences don’t just hang around with other expats. Get to know your neighbors and what is going on around you. Take the kids to local events and cultural sites the area is known for. Go into your new world with a sense of adventure and a willingness to reach out and learn. You will find the experience and exciting and enriching one for the whole family. Make the most out of it. Enjoy the wonder! Mama Nono
