Any tips for keeping kids entertained in restaurants?

Many child friendly restaurants provide a simple set of crayons and something to draw on with word games or colouring pages, but you can’t always count on that. If the restaurant is really busy and service is taking a long time, come prepared. Although you don’t want to haul a ton of toys to a meal outing. It isn’t appropriate in many restaurants, but you can still pack some simple things in a small backpack to carry where ever you go, especially smaller children. Older kids should be able to behave appropriately and wait. Little ones are still learning and often don’t have the attention span or the sit still capability older kids and adults do, no matter how well behaved they are or are expected to be. Put a couple simple books or small drawing and colouring activities. You aren’t setting up a toy room though so keep the item small and unobtrusive. A small doll or small favourite action figures are o.k too. If the kids are fussing waiting for food to arrive, ask if they can bring something small like bread or a few crackers or pack something not too filling in the backpack like some crackers or cut up fruit. Involve the kids, even the little ones in conversations. They learn how to behave in social situations partially by what they see. It is a good time to start showing them what is proper behavior. If you have a really active child, take them outside or to a lobby to burn off a little steam. Then return to sit down again. Don’t let kids run around and annoy other patrons of the restaurant. It can ruin their outing. Mama Nono
