How can I cut down on my Christmas gift list?

Category: Uncategorized

My Christmas gift list is huge. How do I tell people I can’t afford to give everyone gifts without hurting feelings?

Be honest and tell all the people on your list that you need to cut back on your Christmas gift giving list that it is just too expensive for you and not in your budget. Most people will understand that and some may be in the same boat and not sure how to bring it up themselves. You may be doing them a favour by opening up a discussion. No one wants to appear cheap or like Scrooge, but sometimes people just can’t afford to give what they would like to give. It is better to be honest than to get yourself into a financial mess buying things you can’t afford to give. Offer an alternative to giving everyone gifts. Suggest you draw names if a lot of the people on your gift giving list come from the same pool of people, family or friends. That way you can buy one or two nice gifts and not go into debt over Christmas gift giving. Most people love to be able to give gifts, but the reality for many people is that it just isn’t an option all the time. Another idea is to do a group gift that doesn’t go to each other but goes to a charitable group or even to a family that is truly in need. Instead of buying tons of gifts for each other, do something that will lift you into the spirit of Christmas along with lightening the burden on your finances and do for someone else as a group. You may find this is a fun thing to do with everybody that really brings the soul of Christmas home to each of you. Mama Nono
