How can I get my young kids to appreciate poetry?

You don’t have to make it a formal or stuffy lesson to start getting your children interested in poetry. It is the stereotype of stiff and static poetry that makes many people turn away from it. There are a lot of different styles and poetry is much more than that. There are so many children’s books written in one poetic style or another. Go to the library or bookstore and take some time to look through children’s books to pick a few you think your kids might enjoy. Then share the experience with them. If you look through some of the books they already have or think about what you have read to them, you may already be exposing them to a number of poetic styles. Young children enjoy read aloud books that have a rhythm or poetic style. They are easier for them to remember and sometimes they are more fun too. Song lyrics are a form of poetry and simple children’s songs often have a traditional rhyming cadence. Think about songs like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star or Itsy Bitsy Spider. Chances are they are already being exposed to a number of forms of poetry. For really young children acting out the reading with them in body motions gets them more enthused and involved. Some people think poetry is just a matter of rhyming words and that is not only limiting but poetry is much more than that. Read them poetry that touches on things they are interested in personally to really capture their attention. If they are old enough to read and write start having them try to create their own free form poetry. Then have them read it to you. Be sure to give them positive feedback and praise them for their efforts. Another thing you can do is have them create a poem for someone special to them like a parent, teacher or adult friend who will appreciate their efforts. Make the experiences fun and they will keep coming back for more. Mama Nono
