How can I make a sweet butter or margarine for spreading on bread?
My mom often made honey butter for me and I always thought that was a great treat. It is really simple to make. If you use cubes of butter or margarine, let one soften to room temperature and then put it in a bowl and mix it with an equal amount of whatever kind of regular honey you like. Mix it together with a spoon or a power mixer until it is thoroughly blended. Then put it back in the refrigerator until you are going to use it. It is so simple but it is so good and a lot less messy to use than honey by itself. Another kind you can try is peppermint butter. Soften the butter or margarine to room temperature. Crush up some candy canes or round striped peppermint candies by putting them in a zip top plastic bag, closing it and then using a hammer on a cutting board to crush the candy cane to whatever fineness you like the candy cane to be. Then make sure it is broken apart and mix it into the softened margarine or butter. If you want to add more colour to it, add a couple of drops of red food colouring while you are mixing the crushed candy cane in. That will make it more festive looking. Then put it in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it. Both of these sweet butters are good on toast, muffins, corn bread, bagels and even something like pound cake. Enjoy the treats!
