How can I teach my young kids to wash their hands when they need to?

For really young kids you can make a game out of washing their hands. Teaching children when they need to wash their hands and continually reinforcing and repeating it both verbally and physically helps to reinforce the activity in their little heads. You can make up a little song or poem to use when it is time to wash hands. Simple repetitive instructions work the best with small children. One little trick I have used when little hands are particularly messy is to have them raise their hands in the air and walk to the bathroom or sink with hands raised like a little march. Any messes will not be dragged all over that way. This reinforces the idea that they need to get clean hands before they touch things again. Be consistent with children. Make sure they wash their hands before and after every meal, when they come in from outside play or even home from any kind of child care center, school or playtime with other little friends. For really small children make the experience easier too by putting a foot stool by the sink so they have easy access to a place to wash their hands. You want to teach them to be independent so they learn how to do it themselves. As they get a little older you can teach them to sing the alphabet song as they wash their hands so they know they have washed their hands thoroughly. Liquid soap is a lot easier to work with for small children instead of bar soap and a lot less messy too. Have fun with the messy hands! Mama Nono
