How can my children bond with grandparents who live far away?

Category: Uncategorized

My husband’s and my parents live far away and we would like our children to have a relationship with their grandparents even though we can’t be close together. Do you have any suggestions?

Keeping in touch with the grandparents and allowing the grandparents to be in communication with their grandchildren is a good way to let them get to know each other even if they have to be far apart. Make sure you keep photos of the grandparents around the house and tell stories about them that would interest the children as they grow. Now with the advent of the Internet and easy communication by phone there are a lot more ways to allow your children and to encourage your children to get to know their grandparents. You can post photos online or videos online and so can both sets of grandparents if they have access to a computer and online service. There are plenty of photo sharing and video sharing services available online now. You can make it a special event every time e-mail or photos and videos are available to both the grandparents and grandchildren so that they feel they are closer to each other in distance. You can even have grandma and grandpa talk to them or read them a story, on web cam or by video cam and let the children watch them. They will get used to seeing them and hearing them that way so that when they do see them in person they won’t be strangers at all and they will bond with grandma and grandpa more easily. Send mail back and forth by regular postage or little packages so they feel they are special to each other. They need to establish a connection with each other in whatever ways are possible.
