How do I clean my lampshades?

It is a good idea to clean your lampshades when you are doing your regular house cleaning. They will look better and last longer if you keep them clean all the time and not let layers of dust and grime build up over time. To do a good job cleaning it is easier to remove the lampshade and put it down at a level that is easier to work at. For simple cleaning, use a feather duster, clean dry rag or special hand-dusting tool. You simply go over the whole area of the lampshade on the inside and outside and brush it off. If you want to remove the dust more thoroughly, then use the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner tube and carefully vacuum the whole surface of the lampshade. If the lampshade is decorated with items which could be vacuumed up, either make sure the suction will not pull them off of the lampshade while you vacuum or only clean that kind of lampshade by hand. For dirt, stains or spots that cannot be vacuumed off of the lampshade, you may have to use some water and gentle soap, like a liquid dish soap. Try the plain water first though and see if that works. Test a small inside edge first if you are concerned that water might discolor the lampshade. While you are cleaning the lampshade, do not forget to clean the rest of the lamp too. You can even gently clean the light bulb but do not use water on the light bulb. Mama Nono
