How do I cure hemorrhoids with a natural remedy?

Do you know of a natural remedy to cure hemorrhoids?

Granny’s so impressed that you can spell “hemorrhoids” correctly that I’m going to rush right now to answer your question!

As I’m sure you already know, hemorrhoids (or “piles” as my mother called them) are varicose veins of the anus, and are a very common source of discomfort for millions of people world-wide. Yes, we need a global unifier; no, hemorrhoids would not be my first choice. Nor anyone’s first choice, truth be told. However, you’ve got the symptoms; what can be done?

A very gentle way to find immediate relief is to try a sitz-bath. Some folks advocate adding Epsom salts, but Granny believes in just plain warm water. Fill your tub or a basin with about four inches of pleasantly warm water, and carefully ease your bottom into it. Ahhhhh! No astringent, no pain, just warmth. What you’re doing is causing the anal sphincter muscle to relax, thus releasing the squeeze on tender protrusions. Sit in this about 10-15 minutes or so, and think happy thoughts, then gently pat yourself dry. You may do a sitz bath four times per day. But, unfortunately, you have to get out of the tub eventually. So, what next?

One of the old-standby topical relievers of hemorrhoid pain is witch hazel. It’s a primary ingredient in the over-the-counter (hereafter known as OTC) pads that you can buy. Just moisten a cotton ball and apply witch hazel to the affected area. Now, yes, 6witch hazel works like a charm to shrink the ‘rhoids. The downside that no one tells you is that it stings like the very dickens, enough to bring tears to your eyes. So does another little-known home remedy, Vicks Vapo-Rub. (Personally, I always have believed that Johnny Cash wrote the song “Ring of Fire” during a bout of hemorrhoids.) Honestly, most of the expensive OTC remedies are also uncomfortable, so at least you’re not paying premium dollars for a pain in the keister, if that helps. Use white, unscented toilet paper to wipe gently after a bowel movement, and you may also try plain petroleum jelly or zinc oxide externally. (Zinc oxide: think baby bottoms and diaper rash.) If you have an herb garden, a salve of marigold and comfrey dabbed on the area with a cotton ball is another fairly common home remedy. Hemorrhoids are excruciating and difficult to get rid of, but now that you have the pain managed, what then?

Prevention is next, Prevention with a capital P. I mean, who would voluntarily want to go through this again anytime soon?? So, 6listen to what your Mama told you, all these years ago. Don’t strain when you go to the bathroom. Avoid either prolonged constipation or prolonged diarrhea. Eat lots of fiber and whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and nuts, and drink adequate amounts of water to keep yourself hydrated. Try to avoid sitting on the john for extended periods of time; gravity is your enemy. Exercise. It is not a coincidence that, when we take our pets for a walk, they end up having to excrete. If you’re feeling the “urge,” but it’s not quite “there,” take a walk after dinner. Chances are you’ll be able to void your bowels without a fuss when you get home.

One word of warning, though – if you are seeing blood in your stool, in the toilet, or on the paper after a bowel movement and this is a new development, go and see your doctor before trying to self-treat with any of these remedies. Although hemorrhoids can cause small amounts of blood in the stool, blood can also be an early symptom of colorectal cancer. Get a diagnosis first. But I bet if you have hemorrhoids, your doc is going to tell you the same things that Granny just did.

Well, that’s about all I know on the subject. If you have any more trouble, you just come on back and sit…erm, stand here on the porch and tell me about it. Granny’s always got time to listen.

Love,

Granny
