How do I keep my daughter from picking her cuticles?

Category: Uncategorized

My daughter picks her cuticles raw. Why is she doing this and how can I stop it?

Her fingers must look painful at times and probably are. Chances are she isn’t doing it on purpose. Sometimes cuticle picking is just a nervous habit and like any other long term habit, it is difficult to stop. To put it in your own perspective, think about some of your own habits and how you have or would stop one of them. It isn’t easy. At times she may not even realize she is picking her cuticles. If you see her doing it, point it out to her. Nail biters do the same thing. Part of the solution may be to make her realize she is doing it. Reinforce it every time you see her doing it. Just making her aware may help her control the habit. Some people do it when they are thinking and it means nothing. It has just become a habit. If you notice she is doing it more aggressively there may be more behind it. Ask her if something is worrying her or bothering her. The habit may be more pronounced under times of stress or at very emotional times. Help her verbalize what is bothering her and that may help relieve some of the stress and give her another outlet for her anxiety or worry besides making her fingers look like they have been put through a meat grinder. Give her something else to do with her hands to keep them occupied. Help her deal with whatever the problem is. Also make sure she cleans the cuts and raw spots. You might try putting band-aids on them to give them a chance to heal over. It’s a hard habit to kick, so be patient. Mama Nono
