How do I make curls with rags?

This is an old fashioned way to curl your hair, but it works. It is sure a lot more comfortable to wear than big curlers when you need to sleep too. You can make the strips out of just about any old fabric but more stretchy fabrics work best. Old nylons work especially well and are not as bulky as thicker fabric. This is a good way to recycle some old clothes too. Rag curls are softer looking. You cut strips of fabric an inch or two wide and long enough to tie around a small bunch of hair, five to eight inches long. There is no sewing involved. All you need is the fabric and a pair of scissors. To make curls with the rag strips, take a small area of hair and place the end of the hair in the middle of the rag strip. Then start rolling the hair around the rag. It is like rolling thread on a spool, the same way you use regular curlers. Once you get the hair wound up, tie the ends of the rag piece together. You will need quite a few rag strips to cover your whole head. If you have long hair that you want curls in, it may take more rags. One tip is to do this with damp hair, not soaking wet hair. If you hair is too wet, it may not dry in the tight curls. You can sleep with rag curlers on and then untie them all the next morning and brush your hair out. This was one way people curled their hair before curlers were available and it works great to make curls with rags. Mama Nono
