I know what recycling is but what is precycling?

Precycling goes back a step in an effort to help keep our environment clean, slow down the landfills, and cut down on unnecessary consumption. Precycling involves thinking ahead before you purchase. For example if you are planning on buying juice it’s great to pick a container that can be recycled. But it is even better if you pick one when you’re shopping, that takes less energy to produce, uses less product and takes less space when you’re done with a container. A precycler might choose a small frozen concentrate of the juice they want instead of buying a large glass or plastic bottle that can be recycled or carton container of juice that cannot be recycled at all. By choosing the smaller frozen concentrate, the container is smaller and the concentrate can be mixed with water in a pitcher that is used over and over again, instead of buying large bottles that have to be recycled more often because of their size. Another example of precycling would be to use something you already have to wrap a gift with. By not purchasing new wrapping paper you would be precycling and avoiding the recycle step altogether for that particular purchase. You would also be recycling by using something that you already have to wrap a gift with, a glass jar, a basket, extra fabric left over from a craft or sewing project or wrapping paper made from children’s drawings. Precycling is basically cutting down on, or avoiding the production and purchase of things you do not necessarily need. It is thinking ahead of time to which method is going to cause the least damage to the environment and the least waste left over after the product is used. Mama Nono
