Should children only play with dolls that are the same color they are?

No, not any more than human beings should only play with people just like themselves. How incredibly boring is that? I have always encouraged children, my own and others, to play not only with dolls of different colours but dolls dressed in costumes and clothing from different cultures. Prejudice can begin with the smallest things and this is a good way to start nipping that in the bud before it even begins. It is only one thing but it is something. Racism often comes with fear of differences and the unknown and those get blown up into unnatural fears and prejudices. In an ideal world we would all get along and honour each other’s differences and similarities and learn from and about each other, then grow from the experiences. A very simple way to start is to make those differences a part of your child’s everyday life. Racism and prejudice has to be taught. Tolerance and understanding does too. If you don’t make a big deal out of it and their dolls are just dolls to love and play with, it is nothing odd or unique. It just is part of life and the world. Personally I go out of my way to make sure the children I am around are both proud of who they are racially and culturally, and interested in finding out about the people in the world around them. It is a hopeful feeling seeing children love their dolls just because they are their dolls and not because they are one colour or another. So I say emphatically, let and encourage them to play with all kinds. It will enrich their lives. Mama Nono
