Can you recommend some good read out loud poetry books for younger children?

There are so many poetry book to choose from and on any given day I may recommend different ones. One very simple one is Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, a book by Bill Martin Jr. The book not only is simple catchy poetry but it teaches the alphabet in a really fun way. It is also easy to make interactive with smaller children by asking them to fill in words once they have heard the story a couple times. The pictures are also simple and humourous. It basically tells the story about all the letters of the alphabet climbing a tree and falling down only to get up and start all over. It is very sing songy and fun to read out loud. Kids love this poetry book. Another whole series of books are any of the Dr, Seuss books. These classics are illustrated in a fun and infinitely creative style. Dr. Seuss created words and characters that did not even exist and yet with the magic of a rhyming written voice made all of his books come to life. They are timeless. If you want to go for something more classical with children’s poetry, try A Child’s Garden of Verses by Robert Lewis Stevens which has wonderful poems about life and childhood or A.A. Milne’s Now We are Six and When We Were Very Young. They tell fun stories with a lot of humour and tenderness from a child’s point of view. The trick with poetry and young children is to give it life when you are reading to them and pull them into the reading by getting them to interact and respond. Enjoy the poetry! Mama Nono
