What are some simple ways to help relieve nose congestion from a cold or allergies?

I don’t like walking around feeling like I have cotton up my nose either, or like I am wearing a swimmer’s nose plug when I am not. A stuffed nose can make you feel miserable. There are a couple simple techniques which will help with nose congestion without using the nose drops with strong medications in them. Some people are not able to use those and some have reactions, plus if you use them too much they can become less effective. One way to help loosen all that congestion in your nose is by increasing the moisture in your nose. That doesn’t seem to make much sense considering you are trying to get rid of stuff already in your nose, but it does help. Buy some simple saline solution in a nasal spray bottle and use it a number of times during the day. Another method that helps some is pressure. Again this sounds odd, but it may help loosen some of the phlegm. Just squeeze your nostrils together from just below the bridge of your nose and hold your nostrils closed so you have to breathe through your mouth, which you may be doing anyhow with the stuffed nose. Sit and read a book or watch television or something and hold it closed for about 5 or 10 minutes. When you let go, you should be able to get rid of some of the stuffiness. You can repeat this method throughout the day. Finally there is the towel and steam method. Just fill a sink with very hot steamy water. Then bend over with a towel over your head that also covers the sink so that your head is in a mini sauna. Then just stand there and let the moisture in while you breathe for about 10 minutes. Breath deep! Mama Nono
