What are the best foods to donate to food programs?

Check with you local food programs and ask them what they need the most. To donate without asking for their specific needs, think about giving staples that will last awhile like pastas and packages of noodles, bags of rice, canned meat like tuna and chicken, macaroni, high protein prepackaged items like peanut butter. Other dry goods like cereals and even special treats like packaged cookies. If you find a place that takes perishable items like fresh eggs, meat, produce including both fruits and vegetables and dairy products like bottles of milk are always needed. Many grocery stores will donate their dated items and day old breads and pastries but some of the other items I listed are much harder for people struggling to get by to find resources for. In this economy a lot more people are using local food banks to help their families survive. The numbers of needy people at food banks have been growing. It isn’t nice to see, but it is a sad reality. Anything you can donate would be appreciated. It is a harsh reality and the kindness of strangers, although you may never see the recipients of food programs directly, those donations help a lot of people who might not make it without the food they receive there. Donate things that are filling, healthy and that you yourself would like to eat if you were in the same situation. Some grocery stores even have gathering barrels or boxes for donations and they really do get dispersed to local food charities. Give a hand, some food and you are paying it forward. You never know who you might be helping. Mama Nono
