What is a canker sore and are they contagious? How do I get rid of it?

Canker sores can really be painful. No they aren’t contagious. They look like a white or yellow sore with red around it. Eating can be very uncomfortable when you have one. They don’t really know what causes them although there is some thought that poor eating habits, stress or being overly tired can be part of what sets them off. They really sting when you eat certain foods. You can get them anywhere in your mouth, mostly on the inside of the lip or the cheek. My mom used to have me put baking soda on mine and let it sit for a few minutes, then spit it out. I am not sure if that really helped or it was just that I felt like I was doing something about it so it just seemed to help. It tasted disgusting but it did seem to do something to relieve the sting a bit. If you have one it just has to go away by itself but there are things you can do to avoid irritating it and make it more bearable. Canker sores can last up to a couple weeks. Stay away from spicy foods and acidic ones like citrus and tomato. Those really make a canker sore sting. Hot foods can irritate it too. Even foods that are sharp and crunchy can irritate it. You will know instantly if it is being agitated by something in your mouth. Keep your mouth clean but leave the sore alone when you brush your teeth so you aren’t making it worse. There are over the counter products that will coat the sore but it doesn’t take it away. Mama Nono
