What is a good way to housetrain a puppy?
Puppies are like human babies in many ways. They need the same kind of loving attention t learn what is or is not acceptable behavior. But we do not put diapers on puppies. They have to learn how to go outside to go to the bathroom. Most dogs will not soil the area they sleep in so keeping a puppy in a crate or confined area will help reduce any accidents. Like human babies they are not fully developed and may not be able to hold it in. House training a dog can take patience. Some dogs learn quickly and others have more accidents before they learn properly. Establish a routine with your puppy. Take them outside right before bedtime and as soon as you are up in the morning. That gives them a chance to relieve themselves. You may have to get up a couple times in the middle of the night to take them outside, the same way you would have to get up for middle of the night feedings with a human baby. As they get older they will not have to go out as often. If the puppy has an accident in the house, scold them but do not stick their noses in it. Then take them outside. Make sure you praise your puppy every time they actually go to the bathroom outside. They will learn to associate going to the bathroom outside with positive feedback from you. Dogs like to please and get praise for their accomplishments the same way we do. Mama Nono
