What is a winter spare the air day in Northern California?

There are millions of residents in The San Francisco Bay Area and millions of people can add a lot of pollution to the air by burning wood fires in the wintertime. Winter spare the air days were voluntary until 2008. In the summer of 2008 spare the air days became law. On days where contaminants are at higher levels in the air in California, a spare the air day is announced. The particles in wood are a major contaminant in the air in cold months. According to the official spare the air day site, wood burning can contribute as much as a third of the contaminants in the Bay Area air in the wintertime and the lungs are not equipped to deal with the type particle contaminant that wood fires emit into the air. It particularly affects people who have lung problems like asthma or other breathing issues. It is not a well known fact yet but if you burn a wood fire in your fireplace on a spare the air day, you can be reported and fined even by a neighbor. Initially it may only be a letter of warning but the fines can go up in the thousands for additional violations of the new spare the air day law. Winter spare the air days run from the beginning of November to the end of February. You can sign up for notification on the official website so you don’t take a chance on burning wood on a forbidden spare the air day and possibly get fined. Mama Nono
