What is the best way to start walking for exercise?

If you are starting a brand new exercise walking program or you are out of shape, it is better to start off slowly. You may want instant results but it won’t do you any good if you injure yourself by not working up to a more strenuous walking program. Get a decent pair of walking shoes. They are designed for walking and preventing or lessening the wear and tear on your feet, legs and joints. You don’t have to buy the most expensive ones to get decent walking shoes. Walk in the cooler parts of the day, especially to begin. If you can, vary the places you will walk so you don’t get tired of the same routine all the time. If you want to know how far you are walking, either drive the distances and clock them beforehand or get a pedometer to wear so you can track how far you have walked. That will give you goals to shoot for in your walking exercise routine. Do leg stretches before you start off to loosen al the muscles and joints. Star with short walks. It may not seem like much but if you are just starting out it will help you build up. Do one or two 10 to 20 minute walks. Then increase to twice a day if you can. Slowly add minutes and distance to your walking routine. Don’t overdo it to begin with. Keep up a good rhythm as you walk and use your arms too. Swinging you arms as you walk will increase the cardio vascular work out you get from walking. Start slow, build, increase and maintain. After a while it will be easy and routine, even enjoyable.
