What is the difference between the 3 levels of a burn?

The three levels of burn, first, second and third degree burns are different in the severity of the burn and the damage they cause. A first degree burn is the least severe. The top layer of skin is the one involved in a first degree burn. It is also known as a superficial burn. It gets red and painful and can even swell. It usually goes away within a week. Second degree burns go into the top layers of skin. They are also referred to as a partial-thickness burn. They get red and blister. Even a really bad sunburn can blister although most sunburns are first degree. A second degree burn’s blisters contain a clear liquid. The second degree burn is even more painful. They can even cause scars. They last longer than a first degree burn, sometimes taking as long as a month to heal completely. Third degree burns are the most severe. Also known as full-thickness burns, a third degree burn not only destroy all the layers of skin, they can permanently damage bones, nerves, muscle and fat, anything under the surface of the skin. They can truly look blackened and burned like a bad fire. They can be excruciatingly painful or sometimes not that painful if nerves in the area have been destroyed. These leave deep scars and depending on the burn may require surgery and skin grafting to repair some of the damage. Treatment and healing of third degree burns is much longer and more involved than first and second degree burns sometimes requiring ongoing treatments. Mama Nono
