What kinds of books are best for infants and toddlers?

When you buy books for infants, remember they are very hands on and often things go in their mouths if you are not supervising all the time. There are many simple books made for small hands made of washable plastic, fabric books and even the hard books with think cardboard pages. All of these choices are easier for small hands to manipulate. Of course, with supervision regular books are fine too. Children love to be read to, even infants. They will react and respond to your enjoyment reading to them too. As far as content, think simple to begin with. Short rhymes, simple words and easy stories. You can even use more complicated books that have pictures. Simplify them as you tell them. They don’t have to be word for word at that young age. Tell the same story in simple ways as you turn the pages. Get books with easily identifiable pictures that can help you teach them words, numbers and letters to start them on a path to reading. The more they are exposed to books and reading the better they will learn as they grow and the more they will learn to appreciate and enjoy books. Children will emulate what they see and if they see you reading and associate reading with something positive, they will want to do it too. So pick bright, simple, identifiable books to begin with. Books that have pages with very short text and big pictures or simple fun stories and poems will appeal to them. Make the experience fun and a bonding time and they will love it. Mama Nono
