Pick a room in your own home and look around. What basics would you have to have to get started in a new place in each room? Decide which room you want to focus on and start planning your gifts from there. You don’t have to go fancy and expensive either, especially if it isn’t in your budget. For a kitchen you could get a basket of utensils and some hot pads, dish towels and dish rags. Or you could get a basic cook book and put it with measuring spoons and measuring cups. Buy a set of glasses or mugs and put them with a pitcher or a container of their favourite coffee, tea or cocoa. In the bathroom you could get a nice wastebasket and fill it with a soap dish, and set of hand towels or buy a few towels in a set. You could also get a bath rug and toilet seat cover along with a simple shower curtain. For the bedroom a set of sheets with pillowcase covers is always a necessity or a blanket and some pillows. Don’t forget simple storage bins to help organize, especially if their first place is small. For the living room or study think about a lamp or desk lamp, or even something simple to sit on like a bean bag chair or simple desk chair. Starting your first home is a lot of fun but it is very expensive too. Keep in mind their tastes when you buy things if you know them well enough.
