Why are some old appliances damgerous to open up?

Category: Uncategorized

Why is it dangerous to take apart appliances that have “do not open” signs on them?

Those warning signs that say “do not open” or “do not remove the back” are there for a good reason. Manufacturers are not just being overcautious by placing those signs on appliances. Older appliances may not even have them, but you still need to be cautious for the same reasons. Old or new appliances, even including old tube televisions and radios, can store electrical charges for a long time. Those old ones can hold a really strong charge. Any old appliance that is required to power up immediately like microwaves, televisions, radios and so forth take a lot of instant energy to power up quickly. That energy has to be stored for instant access and it is enough energy to do some major damage if touched. That stored energy charge can injure and it can kill you if it is strong enough. Even if you have unplugged any of those appliances, they can still hold the charge. This can even be true for old appliances stored away for a long time. You have to be careful. The rule of thumb is if you don’t know precisely what you are doing with those types of appliances, don’t mess with them. Saving a few bucks to do it yourself is not worth a major shock or dying over. Call a professional or take them in to be repaired. They know how to drain the energy out of the stored transformers inside of the appliances. Don’t assume they are safe because they have been unplugged and stored away for a while, or because they are really old. It is fun to take apart old things sometimes but don’t mess with appliances that hold charges unless you know exactly what you are doing. Mama Nono
