Why does my dog pant in the heat?

Category: Uncategorized

Why does my dog pant when it is hot out? Is she o.k.?

When she pants she is trying to cool herself off. On really hot days my dog can look like she just went for a marathon run when she pants a lot. Dogs don’t sweat the way humans do. They sweat through the pads of their feet, but not the rest of their bodies. It is important to keep your dog cool and provide her with the means to deal with the heat. Make sure there is plenty of fresh cool water inside and outside the house. Check it frequently when it is really hot out because she will consume a lot more water on extremely hot days. I even keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator for my dog and refill it constantly so she can have extra chilled water on extreme heat days. She is a big dog and ice cubes are a real treat to her too. On rare occasions she might even get a little ice cream. If you do that make sure it isn’t chocolate. That is dangerous for dogs. Another thing you can do is either hose her down a couple times a day or put her in the shower to get cooled off. Try sending her out with the kids to play in the sprinklers if you have kids and sprinklers. Don’t take her for exercise runs or long walks in the worst heat of the day. Go early in the morning or later when the temperatures have dropped in the evening. Don’t forget to make sure she has a place to be that is out of the direct sun, whether it is inside or out. Make sure she ahs ways to deal with the heat and she should be fine. Mama Nono
