Why is it so hard to keep a New Year’s resolution?

Part of it is because people make New Year’s resolutions that are really grand and overwhelming, sometimes difficult to attain. It might be better to pick one part of a goal and proclaim that, then when it is achieved improve on it. Sometimes we pick too many things to resolve at once too. It sounds great on New Year’s Eve but when reality kicks in, it isn’t always easy to reach those lofty goals. In some ways I think we set ourselves up for failures by setting unrealistic goals for ourselves with New Year’s resolutions. It is always great to aim high of course, but it isn’t always very realistic. Take a couple of the most popular New Year’s resolutions for example, losing a set amount of weight or getting rich. Those are great goals or even dreams but if you stick to your plan and you don’t reach a specified goal by the end of the years then it feels like a failure. It might be better to choose smaller goals or more general catch all ones that allow you to say you achieved your New Year’s resolution on some level. We are human beings with lots of imperfections. We don’t always attain what we aim for because life steps in and gets in the way of our goals at times. Making a New Year’s resolution is no different. So if you make a New Year’s resolution or more than one, make them realistic, approachable and achievable. Happy New Year! Mama Nono
